This page is a work-in-progress. One of my field areas is in a small rural town in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan called Toyota Town. Much of the local toponymy is derived from the local dialect, which differs quite radically from standard Japanese language. The book Illustrated History and Culture of Toyota Town--published in 1999 by the Toyota Town Board of Education—includes a glossary of the local dialect of Toyota Town, providing each term or phrase in katakana and its meaning in standard Japanese in kanji and hiragana. I will be adding English translations here.
